Sayan is a skilled composer, lyricist and writer. Sayan’s new children’s play STRIPEY HONEY … IS VERY YUMMY (Mashi Theatre) in collaboration with Big Imagination and Spark Arts toured the North West and venues in Nottingham and Leicestershire in 2019. She is currently working on an Oratorio for Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. As a theatre composer and lyricist, Sayan’s musical MAGGIE MAY (written with Bob Eaton) had a successful run and four and five star reviews at The Liverpool Royal Court in 2018. Also in 2018 she previewed a short extract from RED SEED , an opera in development, at Grimeborn (Arcola). Sayan has written a wide range of music and songs for over 30 productions including OSTRICH BOYS (Birmingham Rep), TRUCKERS (Harrogate/tour), TWO (Royal Court, Liverpool), SPANGLEGUTS (London Bubble), THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (Belgrade Theatre and tour), and DINOSAUR DREAMS (Unicorn – nominated for Writers’ Guild Award for best play for young People).
She has written plays that have been performed all over the country including: HECUBA BIRANGONA (Tristan Bates), TALES OF BIRBAL (Mashi Theatre, 2017 tour), MY BIG FAT COWPAT WEDDING (Kali/ Black Country Touring 2014 and 2016), ANOTHER PARADISE (London and national tour – nominated for the John Whiting Award), LIKE HAPPY STUFF (Kali Theatre’s project ’12’), ENDLESS LIGHT (Southwark Playhouse), ANTIGONE’S SISTER (Birmingham Young Rep), KILLING WASPS (Soho Theatre, Staged reading), THE CONTRACT (Joint winner of the Capital New Writing Festival), and has co-written 3 pantomimes MOTHER GOOSE, DICK WHITTINGTON, ALADDIN (Belgrade, Coventry). She has also written many short plays including JESSICA (Arcola), SKIN (Park Theatre), SHARED MEMORIES (Curve and Arcola) and many more with Bold Text Playwrights Collective (Birmingham Rep).
She is also a director and dramaturg; visiting lecturer in Playwriting; a committee member of the West Midlands branch of the Writer’s Guild; and a recipient of the Peggy Ramsay Foundation award.
