Sarah Llewellyn is a classically trained composer working in theatre, film, radio, circus and the concert stage. Skills include composition, arrangement, orchestration, music directing, sound design, music production, recording, performing, workshop leading and teaching.
Sarah was composer in residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company 2017-2019 on the Cameron Mackintosh Scheme. She has composed for productions THE EARTHWORKS, MYTH & TALES FROM OVID, TRANSFORMATIONS (chamber concert piece) and RSC film A STITCH IN TIME. Sarah is currently developing TRANSFORMATIONS for symphony orchestra.
She was composer and music director for ZARA, Mind The Gap’s 2019 epic outdoor production in partnership with Walk The Plank & Emergency Exit Arts. It premiered at Halifax’s Piece Hall in April and then at the Imperial War Museum gardens, London in May.
Sarah created a sound art piece for the GREENHAM WOMEN ARE EVERYWHERE project commissioned by Scary Little Girls & The Heroine Collective with a UK tour Aug-Dec 2019.
2019 also saw premiers in the USA in DC and San Jose of her song, KAKENYA’S DREAM. A commission for ‘HEAR HER SONG’, The Canales Project. A musical celebration of extraordinary women in partnership with United Nations Decade of Women. It premiered in the UK in 2019 and there are further US performances planned this year.
She is currently writing a new musical, THE WIND SINGER, an adaptation of the novel by William Nicholson. Development to date: 25min showcase at Theatre Royal Stratford East, BEAM 2018, week of development in Jan 2019 at the RSC.
Sarah has been invited to return to Hong Kong in 2021 with director Jonathan Holloway with the production A TALE OF TWO CITIES and revive the piece, this time in Cantonese. She is also currently writing an immersive song cycle A LINE IN THE SAND exploring climate change and human migration. It received its first stage of development in March 2019 with Mayflower Productions Southampton and Winchester University.
Other recent commissions include writing and recording the music for a two part BBC RADIO 4 drama THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, theatre production A TALE OF TWO CITIES, (Chung Ying Theatre Hong Kong and Edinburgh Fringe festival).
Sarah has an eclectic portfolio of music for children, circus acts and dance, much of which was created during her 5 years working as composer and musical director for Giffords Circus; WAR AND PEACE THE MUSICAL, THE SATURDAY BOOK, YASMINE A MUSICAL and CARAVAN.
Sarah’s film composition includes: A STITCH IN TIME (RSC), A SHORT EPIC ABOUT LOVE (Told in Pictures), OSCAR AND JIM (Anchovy Pictures), CONTEMPT OF CONSCIENCE (Clarity Productions), REACH ANOTHER FOUNDATION (Charity) and MANCHESTER CITY COUNCIL (various).
Sarah runs her own London based creative music company TONAL and to mark 10 years released her own album in collaboration with French singer/songwriter, Claire Barbier, ‘10’.
